The story tells about Joseph Hooper and his son Edmund and about Mrs Helena Kingshaw and her son Charles, who both move into Joseph Hooper’s house. Joseph and Helena like each other very much, they even get married. But their sons don’t like each other at all, they only don’t see the problem.

The house they live in is called Warings, an old house built by the first Joseph Hooper. In the house is the Red Toom, which used to be a library. Later it became a kind of museum with glass showcases of moths and buttre flies. Edmund was attracted to the room, but he was also afraid of it because of all the dead bodies.

When Charles and his mother arrive Edmund locks himself up and he even tells Charles that he don’t want him and his mother to be in hís house. After some time Edmund even beats Charles.

After a week Kingshaw takes a walk because he wants to be away from the house and Hooper, he now already hates them. After some time he is in the middle of a cornfield and suddenly a crow attacks him. Charles becomes scared and he begins to run. When he reaches the house he sees Edmund in his room laughing about Charles being scared.

He decides that the crow has to stay there until Mrs Boland, the maid comes to clean and takes it away. A few days later Edmund locks Charles up in the Red Room, because Charles is very afraid of death animal.
