Summary of the movie:
Mark Sway is a bow about ten to twelve years old. He lives in a trailer with his very young mother and his brother Ricky. His mother smokes cigarettes all the time and in that way Mark starts smoking too. Because he doesn't want his mother to know, he smokes in the forest near the trailer where the family lives.
One day he steals two cigarettes from his mother and takes his brother into the woods. He lights up a cigarette and gives his little brother one too. Suddenly a car arrives. They put out the cigarettes and duck.
In the car there is a very fat man. He sweats very heavily and drinks out of a bottle of Scotch. Because Mark can't see exactly what he is doing, he crawls nearer to the car. He sees the man is putting some sort of rubber tube in the exhaust of his car. Not much later, Mark understands the man is trying to commit suicide by breathing in the gas.
Mark wants to prevent this from happening, so he pulls out the tube. The man gets out of the car to see what goes wrong. He puts the tube back in and gets back into the car. Again Mark pulls out the tube and hides with his little brother. So the man gets out of the car, a little irritated. When Mark wants to pull out the rubber tube out of the exhaust for the third time, the man suddenly grabs him by his shoulder. He pushes Mark into the car, in the drivers seat, and locks the doors.
The man is a little angry at Mark, but after grabbing his Scotch, he calms down. He introduces himself as Romy and says he likes the idea of them dying together. The man tells why he is doing this: he has some troubles with the mob. He knows too much about a body that is buried in a certain boat house. And if he doesn't kill himself, the mob will.
Suddenly Mark grabs the gun he was looking at all the time under the hand break and points it at Romy. But the man doesn't care of course: he wants to die anyhow. He grabs the gun back and points it at Mark on his turn. 'Let's see if it works', he says. And so he shoots a hole in the window, the bullet going just past Mark.
Mark sees an opportunity to flee and so he does. His little brother Ricky had crawled to the car in the meantime. He is terrified to death and in that way it costs him a lot of time and trouble to reach the car and follow the example of his older brother: pull out the rubber tube in the exhaust.
Mark steps out of the car and while running, he grabs Ricky by his arm. Together they run away and hide in a little abyss. Romy is incredibly mad and calls Mark's name. He steps to the edge of the abyss. Eventually he doesn't want to pay any more attention to the boy, put the gun his mouth and shoots himself.
When they arrive at home, Ricky is in a total shock. Their mother asks what has happened and Mark only tells about the suicidal part. Not about the fact that he has been in the car and had a conversation with the man.
His mother calls the police and shortly the police arrives at the scene of the crime. They collect evidence and one police officer asks Mark some questions. Ricky is examined in the meantime and later on in the movie it seems that Ricky suffers from PTSS. That stands for Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome. The little boy has got into some kind of shock because of all that has happened.
In the hospital the same police officer as the one therefor comes to Mark and wants to make him scared. He has the feeling Mark is not telling the truth, at least not the whole truth. He tells him that people who lie to the police can get in jail for that. Just in time a pretty lady walks up to Mark and asks him to go with her. I guess she is some kind of social worker.
Mark visits a big lawyer office. He walks into some rooms and doesn't like the people he sees. Eventually, he walks into the room of Mrs. Reggie Love. He sees a woman at the window, trying to pull the roller-blind up. He thinks that Reggie Love is a man and walks out again. The woman asks him what he wants and he says he is looking for Mr. Love. She says he is the one he is looking for.
They get into a conversation and it becomes clear to Reggie that Mark wants a lawyer for his family, certainly after what the police man told him. She says it is free of charges because Mark's mother doesn't earn enough money to have to pay it on her own. Reggie agrees to help him.
Then Berry comes into play. He is the nephew of 'uncle Johnny'. Well, the name probably suggested already a little that they both are with the mob. It becomes clear that they have something to do with Romy (the suicide action is on the news)...
