Summary
The book is about Sharon Rabbite. She lives in Barry town, a north-Dublin suburb. In her family that consists of father Jimmy Sr, mother Veronica, three boys and three girls, there’s a great sense of togetherness.
One day Sharon tells her parents that she’s pregnant, she can’t tell them who the father is, but he isn’t going to marry her. At first her parents are angry, but eventually they take it well and she decides to keep the baby.
The father of the baby is George Burgess, a married man and the father of one of Sharon’s friends. It all happened when they were both drunk and Sharon doesn’t want to know a thing about him anymore. That’s why she decides to tell everybody that the father of her child is a Spanish sailor, although people don’t really want to believe that because it’s less spectacular than the truth.
Then one day she thinks about leaving the house, because she feels that her dad is embarrassed of her pregnancy But her dad explains her that it isn’t easy for him either, but they will get through all the difficulties. At the end of the story Sharon is having the baby: it’s a healthy little girl she calls Georgina. Everybody will call her Gina, but Sharon will make them say George to her.
