Mening vooraf:
Dit boek trok mijn aandacht omdat ik op televisie een documentaire had gezien over de slavernij. Ik kreeg medelijden met deze mannen en vrouwen en ik wilde er meer over lezen. Dus ik heb dit boek uitgekozen. De titel doet je niks vermoeden, maar het boek gaat wel over het leven van een zwarte, arme en geminachte vrouw. Het boek leek me ook leuk omdat ik wist dat Whoopi Goldberg in de film speelde en daardoor herkende ik het boek en ben het gaan lezen.
Inhoud:
The book starts on a farm down in the south of America at the beginning of the 20th century. Celie and Nettie are two sisters, who do a lot together. Celie (the eldest of the two sisters) was several times raped by her father (who seemed to be her stepfather at the end) and he still abuses her. Celie has to children, the result of her father’s incestuous behaviour. Both of the children are taking away from Celie. Because Celie has two children she may not go to school, that’s why she is very low educated. Celie learn things from her sister Nettie. In the church there’s a man who always looked at Nettie; his name is Mr….
Mr….. finally came to the house of Celie and Nettie. He asked for Nettie’s hand. The father is against it, but he says to Mr…. that he could have Celie and a cow. Mr….. and Celie married, Celie is going away from Nettie and hopes she will be ok alone with her father. Celie has to look after the children of Mr…... After a while Nettie runs away from home, because she can’t stand her violent and incestuous father anymore. First she came to stay with Celie and her husband in their house, but Celie`s husband try to seduce her. Mr…. say to Celie Nettie has to go. Nettie say she is glad to go, but hates it to leave Celie. Nettie isn’t going back home. She will write Celie. Celie never get one letter of Nettie because her husband is hiding it from her. Celie doesn’t even know that Nettie is still alive. Therefore she goes on writing her lonely letters to God. Harpo (son of Mr…. ) is married with Sophia. Sophia is a strong and confident wife. After a while there’s coming a woman, names Shug Avery, she was the mistress of Mister….. Celie knows her from a picture and she is the most beautiful woman, Celie ever saw. Celie has dreamed about her. Now she finally meets that woman, but she is horrible because she is to drunk. After a while Celie and Shug became good friends. They discuss many things together. They talk about the sex with Mr….. (Now Celie knows his name is Albert) Celie hates the sex and Shug likes it. In the time that Celie and Shug had become friends, Sophia left Harpo, because Harpo finally saw Sophia as emancipated as any woman can be. Shug is a good blues singer. After a while Shug is going away, Celie wants to say that she wants to come with her but she can`t. In that time Sophia has insulted Miss Millie and she is severely punished for that. She had gone to prison and later she has to serve a Miss Millie. She never saw her children. Shug always writes letters to Mr….. One day she says that she is coming back. When she comes back she is married with a man. Mr….. and Grady (Shug`s husband) are drunk all the time. In that time Celie tells about her family, that her mother has died and that her sister has ran away. She says to Shug that nobody ever loved her. Shug says to her: “I love you”, and kisses Celie. Celie kisses Shug back and at the end they have sex. Finally Celie knows that Albert is hiding Nettie`s letters. When Albert and Grady had gone away, Celie and Shug looked for the letters and found them. Then Celie starts to read the letters. Celie reads about Nettie`s life. Nettie has taking a job as housekeeper for the preacher Samuel. The preacher and his wife Corrine had adopted two children; they turn out to be Celie`s children. Nettie looks after them, and follows the family to Africa where the preacher goes to do missionary work. Later, after the preacher’s wife died, Nettie marries him herself. Than Celie discovered that her father wasn’t her real father but her stepfather. Her stepfather hadn’t the right to give her away to Mr…. So when Shug is leaving; Celie is going with her. Squeak goes with them. With the money of Shug Celie starts a shop. She went back to Sofia and Harpo (they now live together again) when the mother of Sofia died. Mr…. is nice to her. Celie is going to live in her old house, because her stepfather died and the house was from her real...
