Santiago is an old fisherman who has not caught a fish for 84 days. Manolin, Santiago's young friend, has been forbidden by his parents to accompany him on his fishing trips because they say Santiago's boat is unlucky. Manolin helps Santiago by carrying his gear to his shack and he gets food for him from the Terrace, a café. They talk about baseball and about Joe DiMaggio, a famous baseball player. Santiago dreams about lions on the beach of Africa.
The next morning Santiago wakes up Manolin, who helps him with his gear and then Santiago rows the skiff several miles out to the sea where he lowers his bait. He catches a tuna while looking at the birds of prey and dolphins. He uses the tuna as bait and at noon he catches a marlin. It is a strong fish for it pulls the skiff further out to sea. The marlin tows the skiff all night and in the morning Santiago eats some of the tuna, talking to the marlin. He has been in the boat for such a long time now that his left hand is cramped and his back is sore and stiff. Then the fish rises out of the water,...
