2. The Summary
The story is about a woman on her 65th birthday. Her name is Francesca, she stands by the window looking at a picture. Her children couldn’t be with her this year, they had other things to do.
While looking at the picture she thinks about a man she met twenty-two years ago.
It was in the summer, a week in which her husband and children weren’t at home.
It was for the first time at a Monday morning that she met him, the photographer for the National Geographic. He did ask the way to a bridge and she would go with him to show it. After that he came with her for a cup of coffee. But his present was so nice that he stayed almost until midnight. After he left she realised that she wanted to see him again. So she left a note at the bridge that he is going to photograph. Then they meet again and again and their relationship gets stronger and stronger. But at the end of the week Francesca has to decide whether she is going to live with the photographer, Robert Kinkaid, or just stay with her family in Winterset. She decides to say goodbye to Robert, although it is very hard for both of them. After saying goodbye Francesca’s life must goes on.
Her husband, Richard Johnson, dies and Francesca still can’t forget Robert Kincaid. One day she finds out that he died too and left some things for her.
The story ends with the Francesca’s death. Her daughter and son read a letter that she wrote for them. It’s about the week that she spent with Robert Kincaid while they were gone, about the way she felt like she never did before or after, and about what happened, so that they would understand.
