The novel, of mice and men, handles about 2 guys named George and Lennie. Because Lennie is stupid and has the mind of a child, George always has to look after him. Lennie can’t do this alone and always gets into troubles.
When they are going to work on a ranch, again Lennie messes it up and this last time George kills him.
The novel was written by John Steinbeck, a social writer. He lived in California, where he wrote his novels. Steinbeck himself did very laboring work before he began to write. That’s why all the characters in the novel also do laboring work on the ranch. The story is also situated in Soledad, a region similar to California, where Steinbeck lived.
The novel has a circular structure. The story begins when George and Lennie are sitting down by the river at the evening before going to the ranch. The end is also situated there by the river, where Lennie got shot by George. So actually the novel ends where it begins.
During the story, you often get several hints at the future. For example when Curley meets Lennie, he says that he doesn’t like big, tall guys, so you actually know that Curley will have a fight with Lennie in the future.
The main characters in the novel are George and Lennie.
