Summary of the story

First I would like to tell you what a hobbit is and what he looks like. A hobbit is a little people, about half our height and smaller than dwarves. A hobbit also hasn't a beard, like dwarves have. He's inclined to be fat in his stomach; he likes to be dressed in very coloured clothes, especially green and yellow; he wears no shoes, because he has a natural grown leathery sole and thick warm brown hair on his feet; he has long brown fingers and a face like a human being. The hobbit in this story is called Bilbo Baggins. He likes eating and sleeping mostly and he's absolutely not looking for adventure..., but he will have an adventure. One day Gandalf, an old man with a staff appeared in front of Bilbo. He had a tall pointed blue hat on his head, a long grey cloak, a silver scarf, a long white beard hanging down below his waist, and on his feet he wore great black boots. He is a wizard. Gandalf asked if Bilbo wanted to share in an adventure, but hobbits doesn't like adventure, so Bilbo said no, but he invited Gandalf for tea-time the next morning. Then he quickly ran into his hole. Gandalf scratched a strange sign on his front-door before he also left. The next morning Bilbo didn't remember anything of what happened yesterday. Suddenly he heard the door-bell ringing and than he remembered and ran to the door. When he opened the door, he saw a dwarf, instead of Gandalf. The dwarf entered the hobbit-hole. Bilbo was very surprised and asked the dwarf to drink tea with him. When they were in the room the bell rang again and another dwarf entered Bilbo's hole. This happened another three times. The last time it was Gandalf with four dwarves. In Bilbo's room were yet 13 dwarves; Dwalin, Balin, Kili, Fili, Dori, Nori, Ori, Oin, Gloin, Bifur, Bofur, Bombur and their leader Thorin Oakenshield, and Gandalf and Bilbo of course. After a couple of hours Bilbo's larder is almost empty, when the dwarves started singing about great mountains, caves and gold. Then Bilbo felt in love with the things they sang about. After the song, Thorin began to speak. He spoke about an adventure, a dangerous adventure which some wouldn't survive. When Bilbo heard that he might die, he went sitting in the corner of the room, shaking. But when Gloin insulted him that he's more like a grocer than a burglar, Bilbo came out of his corner and said he would do everything they would ask. Then he heard that he had to break into the caves of Smaug the dragon and steal the gold that Smaug had stolen from the dwarves. Thorin told him the history of the gold and his people. They looked at a map that Gandalf brought with him to see which road they will follow. When Bilbo woke up the next morning he found the dwarves gone, even without a thank-you. He thought that the story about the gold guarded by a dragon was nonsense, but then Gandalf came in and asked why he is still at home. Gandalf told Bilbo that he had 10 minutes left to meet the dwarves at an inn, so he ran very quickly. When he arrived at the inn, they started with their dangerous journey to the Desolation of Smaug. After a while Gandalf joined them. They rode on ponies, except Gandalf who rode a great white horse. When they left the hobbit-lands they rode through a deep valley with a river. Then one of the ponies got into the river. It was a pony loaded with food. Now they had less food. Then Balin saw a light through the trees. There might be food for them. Bilbo, who was the burglar of them, had to find out who was at the light. Bilbo didn't want to do this, because he had no experience in burgling, but he couldn't get support of Gandalf, because Gandalf had suddenly left without any word. So Bilbo had to go to the light. At the light he saw three large trolls sitting round a large fire eating toasted mutton. Bilbo wanted to go back, but he also wanted to prove he was a good burglar. So he rolled the purse of William. But William was faster than Bilbo and he grabbed Bilbo. He called Blimey and Bert, the other trolls. They got quarrel about what they should do with Bilbo and when they started fighting, Bilbo could escape. Instead of leaving this place, Bilbo kept watching the fight. Suddenly Balin came up in the middle of the fight. The dwarves had heard the noises and Balin had come to look for Bilbo. The trolls grabbed Balin and put him in a sack. After a while the other dwarves also came, searching for Bilbo and Balin. The trolls also grabbed them. Then they started to discuss what they should do with the dwarves. At that time Gandalf returned. No one saw him, not even Bilbo who was hiding behind the trees. Gandalf saved the dwarves by keeping the trolls busy. Now and then he said something. The trolls thought that one of them said it. So they were fighting and discussing till dawn. If trolls aren't underground before dawn they become stoned like rocks. After Blimey, Bert and William were stoned, Gandalf and Bilbo let the dwarves out of their sacks. Then they found a path that leads to the trolls' cave. Inside the cave they found weapons, food and gold. The gold they buried in the forest and they stayed the rest of the day and night in the cave. Then they continued their journey. Few days later they arrived at the Misty Mountains. The road led over small paths besides deep ravines. Then they came in a valley with water and trees. They heard elves singing. They arrived at the Last Homely House where Elrond lives. He's a good host for them. They stayed the night with Elrond. He's a very wise man and he gave them some advise about the map and the mountains. After a sleep and a great breakfast, Bilbo and his friends left the Last Homely House and followed the road over the Misty Mountains. One day a great thunderstorm came over the mountains. The sky was filled with thunder and lightning. The ponies were frightened so they had to search for a cave. Soon they had found one big enough for everyone, including the ponies. There were no animals or other creatures in the cave so they could sleep safely, they thought. Suddenly Bilbo woke up and he saw that there was a crack in the cave’s wall. He saw the last ponies disappear into it. He yelled. Goblins, great ugly-looking creatures jumped out of the crack. They grabbed the dwarves and Bilbo and carried them out of the cave just before the crack closed. Some of the goblins were killed by a terrific flash. Gandalf was responsible for that flash and also for the closing of the crack, but the crack was closed with the goblins and their captures at one side, and Gandalf at the other side. The goblins took their captures to the Great Goblin, their leader. When he saw the sword that Thorin wore he shouted that they had to be killed. The sword was taken from the trolls' cave. It was called Orcrist. By that sword many goblins were killed in battle. Suddenly all the lights went out. In the dark flashed a sword and the Great Goblin was killed by the flash. Someone had come to save them. Quickly they ran away through the tunnels. Bilbo, who couldn't run so fast, was at the back of Dori. When they stopped for a while they saw it was Gandalf. His sword was called Glamdring the Foe-hammer. The goblins hated this sword more than Orcrist. This sword also had killed many of them in battle. Quick they ran further, because the goblins came after them. Suddenly Dori was grabbed in the dark. Bilbo fell of him with his head on the ground and became senseless. When Bilbo woke up alone in the darkness. After he got up, he felt something like a ring. He put it in his pocket. Then he began to walk, feeling the way with his hands on the walls. Suddenly he splashed into an ice-cold lake. He stepped back. He didn’t want to go back , because he would get between the goblins again. He saw nothing, but he was seen by a small slimy creature called Gollum. He had two big round pale eyes in his thin face. He lived on an island in the middle of the lake. He got into his boat and went to Bilbo. Because Gollum was always alone and he had no one to talk with, he called himself 'preciousss'. Bilbo was frightened to death when he heard Gollum whispering. Bilbo was lucky that Gollum wasn't hungry, otherwise he would be dead now. But Gollum wanted to talk with someone. Because he loved riddles, they started a riddle-competition. If Bilbo would win, Gollum would show him the way out, if he lost, he would be eaten. After a few riddles Bilbo had to give a riddle, but he couldn't think of one. When he felt in his pocked, he said: "What have I got in my pocket?" Gollum shouted that it wasn't a fair riddle. He wanted to guess three times. Bilbo agreed, but Gollum didn't know the right answer. He had to show Bilbo the way out, but Gollum was very hungry. He said he would return in a minute and went back to his island to get the ring Bilbo had in his pocket. This ring would make him invisible. Of course he couldn't find the ring. Now Gollum had to catch Bilbo without his ring. Bilbo saw him just in time and ran away. When he put his hand in his pocket, the ring slipped on his finger. Suddenly Bilbo fell. He was terrified that Gollum would grab him, but Gollum passed him. Then Bilbo felt the ring on his finger and he understood that the ring made him invisible. He followed Gollum, because he thought that Gollum went to the way out. That was right, and so he escaped. Bilbo didn't know where he was. Suddenly he saw a red hood and so he got back at the Company. They were very surprised to see him. Bilbo had to tell his adventures. After that they went on over a small pad. Suddenly they all slipped and fell down. Luckily there were trees at the bottom of the ravine who saved them. When they stood all together again, they heard wolves howling. Quickly they went up in the trees. But Bilbo was too little to reach the branches of the trees. Dori helped him into a tree, just before the wolves arrived. The Wargs, as the wolves were named, jumped to them. But they couldn't reach them. They besieged the trees till goblins would come. Gandalf understood their meaning, so he started with throwing pinecones out the tree, which he set in fire The wolves set each other in fire and they also set the trees in fire. There was a lot of noise around the trees where the Company were sitting in. This noise reached the Lord of the Eagles. He was sitting in the mountains. He swept up into the air to see why the wolves were making such noise. In the meantime the goblins had arrived. They set fire in the trees in which Bilbo and the rest was sitting. Now they were captured. The fire reached Gandalf first. He jumped out of the tree. Just at that moment the Lord of the Eagles swept down and seized him in his talons. The other eagles saved the rest of the company. Gandalf and the Lord of the Eagles had decided that the eagles would bring them over the Misty Mountains. They ate and slept with the eagles. The adventure in the Misty Mountains was over. The next day the Company was set down on a great rock. After the eagles were gone Gandalf told them the sad news that he wouldn’t be with them all the time. But first he would bring them to someone he knew very well to get food and ponies. In the afternoon they came at the place where that person lived. Gandalf had told them that this person could get angry very easily and that they had to be polite. The man was called Beorn, a bear-man. When he hunted, he took the shape of a bear. So he could travel faster. When he had a man shape, he had a lot of hair on his skin. They got food and a place to sleep. After some days they left with ponies and food for a week. They had to sent the ponies back when they arrived at Mirkwood-forest. Through Mirkwood was only one path. Beorn advised them to never leave that path. There also was no water in Mirkwood. Just one stream crossed their path, but they shouldn't drink nor touch that at any time. When they arrived at Mirkwood they sent the ponies home. Gandalf didn't sent his horse back, because he was going to leave the Company the next morning. Bilbo had to look after the dwarves now. The last thing Gandalf said was 'DON'T LEAVE THE PATH!' Then the dwarves entered Mirkwood, the most dangerous part of their journey. They hated the forest pretty soon as much as they hated the goblin-tunnels because of the darkness. There was hardly light and no fresh air. In the night...
