Jerzy Kosinski was born in Lodz, Poland, in June 1933. In World War II, he lost almost all his family. Kosinski himself has gone to the country were he has bigger a chance of survive than in the city. His stay on the Polish countryside changed his life, because of the continually exposure to hunger, cruelty and the horrors of war. After the war he attended the university of Lodz, Warsaw and Moscow, where he was suspended a few times for his criticism of Marxism. He has quit a nice life under Communism as a university professor.
In 1957, Kosinski left to the U.S.A. Where he learned English. Then he went to Columbia University and the New School for Social Research. He started a career in academe. He was also professor in Engish Prose and Criticism at the Yale School of Drama and Fellow of Timothy Dwight College at Yale University.
Kosinski served as president of the American Civil Liberties Award for demostrating the validity of the first Amendment's right of free expression.
Kosinski's first novel, The painted bird, appeared in 1965 and won him immediate international fame, his last novel appeared in 1988. Kosinski died in 1991.
