The war of the worlds
Wells, H.G.
Geplaatst op Zondag 07 oktober 2001

In the first chapter the writer tells us that on the planet of Mars intelligent beings are preparing to capture Earth. The Martians want to have Earth because of its biological richness, wich is something they can consume. They have followed all the movements on the Earth to pick a moment and place for an attack.

In 1894 when Mars was in opposition a great light was seen on the illuminated part of the sphere; the Martians were coming. Every 24 hours a great light appeared approximately 10 times.

One night a few days later there was a falling star coming out of the sky. It must have fallen at about one hundred miles eastward of the writers home. Ogilvy went there to see what is was: A big cillinder has fallen out of the sky and made a deep pit in Horsell Common. The noises that have been heard ceased. The people thought the Martians were dead. But this wasn't true. The cillinder was still unscrewing the top and they came out. The Martians had big eyes, tentacles and a V shaped mouth. They ate some humans who had fallen into the pit. Later they used their heat-ray on the crowd and on the villages. The writer returned to home and ate. In the mean time the Martians were building a fighting machine. Then the second cillinder fell.

The army in the mean time had dispatched an army unit to Horsell Common to observe and even destroy the Martians if they would become a threat. The writer talked to some soldiers. Those soldiers had no idea how to fight them. A few hours later the fight begun with some gunshots. The army lost and the writer had to flee to Leatherhead with his wife. When his wife was settled he drove back to see what happened. During his drive he saw the third falling star. Approching Maybury Hill he heard thunderclaps and saw blinding flickering lights. And then he saw the fighting Machine for the first time; a large monsterous tripod higher than many houses and on that a lage piece of machinery. The thing joined his companion and walked away into the darkness. Heavy wheather came up, hail and heavy winds blew him into a ditch. He saw a dead body and rushed to his home.

In his house he hid under his window and tried to see what the Martians were doing. The Martians left a trail of destruction and chaos. Then a artillary came into his house. He told the writer about what happened on Horsell. The Fighting Machine had killed many soldiers and horses but he survived miraculusly. The three Fighting Machines were now together and continued there way.

The writer was impressed by the performance of the Martians...
