TITLE

The title,”The virgin and the gipsy” refers to the main characters. The Virgin is Yvette Saywell.

THEME

The first theme is the emotional dominance of one person over another. It’s about the significance of individual freedom. The granny tries to impose her will on the other members of the family. Yvette is the one with an independent spirit and yearns for a life outside the restrains of family life. The gipsy symbolizes the kind of freedom Yvette is thinking of.
The second theme is the contrast between what Lawrence called the life of the mind, and the life of the “blood”. What Lawrence means with the life of the blood, is a natural, instinctive, unrestrained way of life.

SETTING

The action takes place in a small town called Papplewick. Papplewick is down the hills in the valley in the north of England.

TIME

The story is played in the 1920s. The story is chronological with some flashbacks.

POINT OF VIEW

The story is told by an omniscient author, he knows what the characters are thinking.

GENRE

The virgin and the gipsy is a psychological novel.

CHARACTERS

Rector Sawell is the father of Yvette and Lucille. He spoils Yvette.
Lucille: She more ready to except the conventions of the older generation. She is willing to have a good time while she is young.
Yvette: She is more sensitive and adventurous about life. It is difficult for her to understand her own feelings.
The mater: The mother of rector Sawell. She is powerful and dominant. She keeps her power over the family by saying that her son needs sympathy.
Aunt Cissie: The sister of rector Sawell. She is not married and she is a pale, frustrated woman. She seems to be afraid of life.

THE AUTHOR

David Herbert Lawrence (called D.H. Lawrence) lived from 1885 till 1930. His father was a Nothingham miner and died of tuberculosis. Lawrence produced a lot of novels, poems, plays, essays end letter. In his search for a more satisfactory way of life, away from western civilization, he travels through Europe, Asia, Australia and Central America. He hated hypocrites and false attitudes. Lawrence his wife did the same thing as the vicar’s wife with her, she left her husband for Lawrence.

COMPOSITION

The book is dedicated “for my brother Peter”
The book contains five chapters without a title, in 154 pages.
