Chapter 1
One morning Kino, a poor fisherman and Juana, his wife, are having breakfast. Then a terrible thing happens; Coyotito, their baby, is stung by a scorpion. Juana tries to suck out the poison. But the baby gets very ill. Then they go to a doctor because the doctor doesn't want to go to them. All the neighbors are going with them because the thing had become a neighborhood affair. The rich doctor doesn't want to help Coyotito because Kino is too poor to pay him. He has his servant tell Kino that he's not at home. Kino has become very angry.
Chapter 2
The next morning Kino dives for oysters. Juana prays that he will find a pearl to pay the doctor. That morning Kino is very lucky and he finds an enormous pearl. He is happier when he sees that Coy9tito is already better.
Chapter 3
The news of the pearl spreads very fast. Everybody in town hopes to profit from it. Kino says that he and Juana will get married in the church now, and he wants to send Coyotito to school. He wants new clothes, a harpoon and a rifle too. That evening the doctor visits them. Kino says the baby has almost recovered the doctor still gives him some medicine. He warns Kino that the scorpion's poison can become active again within an hour. Kino buries the pearl in the dirt floor when the doctor is gone. Within an hour Coyotito becomes very ill. The doctor comes back and gives the baby a drink. Coyotito recovers and the doctor wants Kino to pay the bill as soon as he has sod the pearl. That night someone tries to steal the pearl but Kino chases him away after a fight. Juana gives Kino the advice to throw the pearl back into the sea.
Chapter 4
The next day Kino went to one of the pearl buyers. In fact...
